When you use Send on the web, file data is encrypted on your device and uploaded as smaller pieces for temporary storage in Hivenet's network. A recipient uses the transfer link to download the files while they are available.
The Mac app's Send action starts with a file that has already finished uploading to Store. Use web Send if you need its transfer password or email options.
What chunking and encryption do
A chunk is a smaller piece of file data. Chunking divides data into pieces; encryption protects their contents. Send handles those pieces automatically and puts them back together when the recipient downloads the files.
Encryption and chunking do not make a malicious file harmless or guarantee that a recipient can open it. Recipients need the appropriate app and should keep their device security protections enabled. See Send file types and archives.
Protect access to the files
Add an optional transfer password in web Send if you need a password check before recipients open the files.
Give the complete link and any transfer password only to the intended recipients. Send the password through a separate channel when possible.
Keep your Hivenet account password and Store encryption passphrase private. Recipients do not need them to open a Send transfer.
Treat the link as private. Someone who has the link and any required transfer password can access the available transfer.
Check the original and the downloaded copy
Keep a usable original or another saved copy of anything you need later.
Ask the recipient to open the link, enter the transfer password if required, select the files, and download them before expiry.
Have the recipient open the saved files and check that they contain the expected content or version.
Your original and the recipient's download are complete, separate copies. Chunking does not remove them, and sending a file does not replace a backup.
If a download fails or the link expires
Follow Send upload and download troubleshooting if the download fails. Keep any working copy; you do not need to manage the stored pieces yourself.
After expiry, use Send expiry and finding an existing copy to find a saved copy or request a new transfer. Expiry does not erase copies already saved on a device.
Privacy, location, and early removal
File encryption does not answer every question about service records, retention, or storage location. Read Send privacy, storage location, and data retention.
If you need access stopped before expiry, contact Hivenet Support to check the available options. Deleting a message containing the link does not disable the transfer.
