Test a change to your file workflow

Try one change with separate sample files and check the result before using it more widely.

Start with one problem you want to solve, such as finding a document faster or updating a backup more consistently. Try one change using separate sample files before applying it to your working folders.

Define the trial

  1. Write the result you want and how you will check it.

  2. Choose a small set of files you can recognize and keep the originals in their current location.

  3. Read the tool's current instructions for your device. Check which files it reads or changes, whether deleting a file also deletes another copy, and how it handles two versions with the same name. Check how to turn off the rule or stop the tool before starting.

Do not connect a new tool to your whole library for the first trial. A rule or sync action can affect more files than the one you meant to test.

Make one change and check it

  1. Use a separate test folder containing copies of the sample files.

  2. Change one setting or step, following the tool's instructions.

  3. Check the files at both the starting and destination locations. Open the resulting copy and compare its contents.

  4. Record whether the result meets your goal and whether any unexpected change occurred.

If files are missing, overwritten or unreadable, stop the trial and keep the working originals. Resolve the cause before using the change on more files.

Keep the result

Record the tool and version, the setting, the sample checked and any limitation. Use the change more widely only after the result is understood and repeatable.

For scheduled backups, use the automatic-backup guide. For an existing backup, use the retrieval-test guide. Neither a cloud folder nor a successful upload establishes that another app can use that folder as its live library.
