Test a backup by retrieving a file and checking that the version and contents are usable. A completed backup job or a file listed in a folder is not enough to show that you can recover what you need.
Prepare a small check
Choose a file whose contents you recognize. Keep the working original where it is.
Name the backup destination and the saved version or date you expect.
Choose a separate location for the retrieved copy. Check the recovery tool's options before starting; restoring to the original location can replace the current file.
For a routine test, you do not need to delete or damage the original. Use a file you can compare without changing your working copy.
Retrieve and open the copy
Use the backup tool's documented recovery method to retrieve the selected version into the separate location.
Open the retrieved file in the app it needs.
Check its contents and version against what you expected. For a document, check the pages or sections; for media, check that it opens and plays. For a project, also check the linked files and app components it needs.
For a copy kept in Store, use the upload and separate-download exercise in the first-file check. Check that you are opening the retrieved copy, rather than the original or a shortcut to it.
Record the result
Record | What to write |
File and expected version | The file name and date or version you intended to retrieve. |
Backup checked | The device, service or saved backup used. |
Date and result | When you checked it, whether it opened and whether the contents matched. |
Follow-up | Any missing or incorrect content, the next action and the next check date. |
Repeat the check for each backup destination you rely on. Choose different files over time, including file types and older versions that matter to you.
If the check fails
Keep the usable originals and other backups. Check the selected version, destination access and any backup or download error. Fix the cause and repeat the test before relying on that copy.
For a Store retrieval problem, contact Hivenet Support with your device, app or browser version, the action and error. Do not send the file itself unless Support asks for it and you are comfortable sharing it.
Check again when the setup changes
Set the next check date in your storage review plan. Also check after changing the backup tool, destination, included folders or device. A successful file test covers the selected file and version at that time; it does not prove that every file or an entire computer can be restored.
