Check the integrity of a file from Store

Compare a retrieved file with the expected version, record the result and preserve usable copies if something is wrong.

Written by Thanasis Karavasilis

Data integrity means that data has not been changed, lost or damaged in an unwanted way. For a file in Store, a useful first check is to retrieve a separate copy and compare it with the version you expected.

Storage redundancy can help reconstruct missing fragments when enough valid data remains. You still need to check that the retrieved file contains what you intended to keep.

Prepare the comparison

  1. Choose a file whose expected contents and version you can identify. Keep the original and other usable copies unchanged.

  2. Use the first-file guide to download the stored copy into a separate location.

  3. Confirm the saved location before opening the file, so you do not inspect the original by mistake.

Compare the contents

File type

What to compare

Document or spreadsheet

The expected version, pages or sheets, and the content you need. Check more than the title or first page.

Image, audio or video

The expected image or recording, its completeness and whether it opens or plays correctly.

Project or archive

The files and dependencies required by the receiving app. Opening one item does not confirm that the whole project or archive is usable.

Matching names or displayed sizes alone does not establish identical content. This practical review can reveal missing or unusable content, but it does not prove that every byte is unchanged or that a file is authentic or safe to run.

Record the result

  1. Write down the file, expected version, downloaded-copy location and date of the check.

  2. Record what you compared and any missing content or opening error.

  3. If you rely on this copy as a backup, use the backup test guide to include the other backup destinations you depend on.

A successful result applies to the selected file and the parts you checked. It does not establish that every stored file can be recovered.

If something does not match

Keep all usable copies and avoid replacing them with the suspect file. Contact Hivenet Support with the expected result, observed difference, device and app or browser. Do not send private file contents unless needed and agreed.
