Manage downloaded and online-only Store files

Free device space, prepare files for offline use and check copies moved outside the Hivenet folder.

Downloaded Hivenet files use space on your computer. Your Store allowance and your computer's free space are separate: removing a local download does not reduce the amount stored in your account.

Downloaded and online-only files

File state

What it means

Downloaded

A copy is available on this computer. Check that the download has finished before relying on it without an internet connection.

Online-only

The file is in Store. You need an internet connection to download it to this computer.

Keep Downloaded tells macOS to keep a local copy. Turning it off allows macOS to remove the download when it needs space; it does not remove the download immediately. Use Remove Download to request removal of the local copy.

Before you remove a download

Do not use Delete, empty Trash, or move files out of the Hivenet folder to remove only a local download.

  1. Check that the file has finished uploading.

  2. Confirm that you can download and open the file from Store.

  3. Keep a separate copy of important files before changing their storage state.

Remove a download on macOS

  1. Close the file in any app using it.

  2. Open the Hivenet folder in Finder.

  3. Control-click the file. If Keep Downloaded is on, turn it off. The menu may show Stop Keeping Downloaded.

  4. Control-click the file and select Remove Download.

Removing a local download leaves the uploaded file in Store. You need an internet connection to download it again.

If the file stays downloaded on macOS

Check whether a containing folder has Keep Downloaded turned on. Its setting can keep the files inside it downloaded. Review that setting before changing it, because it also affects other files in the folder.

An app or Finder can also keep a file in use. Close the file and reopen the Finder window, then try again. Removal may take time, so check the result before assuming that space has been freed.

Remove a download on Windows

  1. Close the file in any app using it.

  2. Open the Hivenet folder in File Explorer.

  3. Right-click the file and select Free up space.

Check that the file becomes online-only. It should remain in Store, and you will need an internet connection to download it again. Check the result before assuming that device space has been freed.

Check a file before going offline

Choose a small document or image that opens in an app on this computer. Keep its original separately and make sure its upload to Store has finished.

  • On a Mac, Control-click the file in the Hivenet folder and select Keep Downloaded.

  • On Windows, right-click the file in the Hivenet folder and select Always keep on this device.

  1. Wait for the download to finish. Open the file, check its contents and close it.

  2. When no uploads or downloads are running, temporarily disconnect this computer from the internet.

  3. Reopen the same file in its usual app and check that you can read its contents.

  4. Reconnect the computer to the internet after the check.

If it does not open offline, reconnect and check its download status before relying on it. Repeat the check for each file you need. This checks those files on this computer; keep an independent copy of important files.

On a phone or tablet, check the specific file and where its downloaded copy is saved. A preview does not confirm that the complete file is available offline.

Keep a separate copy outside Hivenet

  1. In the web app, open Store and find the file.

  2. Open the file's menu and select Download. Save the copy in a separate folder outside Hivenet.

  3. Open the downloaded copy and check that its contents are complete. Leave the Store file in place.

If you already moved a file outside Hivenet

Check the new location first. If the file opens there, keep that copy. Moving a file out of the Hivenet folder can affect the file stored in your account; it is not a way to remove only its download.

  1. Check Store in the web app. If the file is missing, check Trash and use the deletion and restore guide for an item still available there.

  2. If the file is still listed in Store, download a separate copy and check that it opens before making further changes.

  3. If you cannot find or open a usable copy, contact Hivenet Support with your operating system, app version and the action you took. Keep any working session open.

If an action is missing or does not finish

Do not use Delete as a substitute. Contact Hivenet Support with your operating system, Hivenet app version, and the action you are trying to use. Include whether the file is still syncing or shows an error.
