When you rename a file or folder or create a folder in Store on the web, the new name must follow these rules. If the name is rejected, correct it before selecting Rename or Create.
Choose a valid name
Do not use these characters:
<>:"/\|?*.Do not end the name with a period (
.).Do not use names reserved by Windows:
CON,PRN,AUX,NUL,COM1toCOM9, orLPT1toLPT9. This applies in any letter case and with an extension, sonul.txtis also rejected.Enter a name. Empty names,
., and..are not accepted.
For example, use Q3 plan.pdf instead of Q3: plan?.pdf. Keep the file extension, such as .pdf, when changing the rest of the name.
When renaming, Store replaces invisible control characters, such as tabs, with spaces and removes spaces at the beginning and end. Check the name before confirming.
A name can begin with a dot, such as .notes.txt. These items are hidden by default on the web. See how to show hidden files and folders.
Correct a rejected name
If another app uses the file or folder, check that app’s guidance before renaming it. Links and saved locations may depend on the name.
Open the Hivenet web app and go to Store → All files.
Open the file or folder’s three-dot menu and select Rename.
Enter the new name. If an error appears, remove the restricted characters, remove the final period, or choose a name that is not reserved by Windows. Rename stays unavailable while the name is invalid.
Select Rename and check that the new name appears. Select Cancel to keep the current name.
To create a folder, open the + menu, select New folder, enter a valid name, and select Create.
Files that already have a restricted name
These name checks do not rename files during upload. An uploaded file can therefore still have a restricted character in its name. If you later rename it on the web, the whole new name must pass the checks.
Why a file name can look different on Windows
The Hivenet Windows app displays each of the nine restricted characters listed above as an underscore (_). For example, Q3: plan?.pdf appears as Q3_ plan_.pdf. This is a local name adjustment; Store keeps the original uploaded name.
If you cannot find a file by its exact name on Windows, check the same folder for underscores in place of those characters. Open a separate downloaded copy and check its contents. If the file is still missing, follow Find a file missing on another device.
If a name that follows these rules is still rejected, keep the file and any working copies in place. Contact Hivenet Support with your browser version and the exact error message.
