How can you review your folder structure?

If you can’t find your files, your system’s not working.

Over time, even the tidiest folder system can turn into a mess. What made sense six months ago might feel chaotic now. That’s normal—and totally fixable.

We recommend reviewing your folder structure at least once a year. It doesn’t have to be a big cleanup—just take a moment to ask:

Does your system still match how you think?

  • Are your folders too broad? (e.g., everything from 2023 in one place)

  • Too granular? (e.g., “Q4/Week 2/Client 4/Draft 5/Final v3 FINAL FINAL.pdf”)

  • Too many top-level categories? (maybe “Work” and “Personal” is enough)

If your folder names make you pause every time you’re saving something, it’s time for a tune-up.

Decluttering tip

Don't try to fix everything at once. Pick one folder (like “Downloads” or “Work 2022”) and clean it up in 10–15 minutes. Small wins make a big difference.

A tidy folder structure makes searching, syncing, and backing up way easier—and you’ll feel a little more in control every time you log in.
