Let’s be honest—manual backups are a chore. You’ll forget. We all do. That’s why the most reliable backup strategy is one that runs without you thinking about it.

Good news: whether you're using Mac, Windows, or a third-party tool, you can set it and forget it.

Tools to get started

  • Time Machine (Mac): Built into macOS, great for backing up to an external drive or NAS.

  • File History (Windows): Schedule regular backups of selected folders.

  • FreeFileSync: Free, flexible, and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

  • Carbonite / Acronis: Paid tools with extra features and automation built-in.

Hivenet automation is coming. Our team is actively working on ways to support smart, scheduled backup flows. Stay tuned.

How often should you back up?

It depends:

  • Daily: If you’re working on high-stakes, constantly changing files

  • Weekly: For less frequent but still important updates

  • Monthly: For cold storage, archives, or files you rarely touch

The most important thing? Pick a schedule and stick to it.
