Here’s a hard truth: it’s not if you’ll lose data—it’s when. Maybe your drive dies.

Maybe your files get corrupted. Maybe it’s just... gone.

That’s where the 3-2-1 backup strategy comes in. It’s simple, flexible, and has stood the test of time.

What is 3-2-1?

This backup strategy was coined by photographer Peter Krogh in 2009—and it still holds up. Here’s the rule:

  • 3 copies of your data (1 original + 2 backups)

  • 2 different types of storage media

  • 1 copy stored offsite

Why it works:

  • Multiple backups = better chances of recovery

  • Using different storage types protects you from one failing

  • Offsite storage protects you from fire, flood, theft—or just spilling coffee on everything

Why this matters for Hivenet users

Even though Hivenet is a distributed, resilient storage system, no single solution is bulletproof. A good backup strategy adds layers of protection—just in case.

Hivenet fits perfectly into the “1 offsite copy” role. It’s cloud-based, geographically distributed, and always there when you need it.

In the next few articles, we’ll unpack each part of 3-2-1 in more detail—and look at how to go beyond it if you want to sleep really well at night.
