Here’s a hard truth: it’s not if you’ll lose data—it’s when. Maybe your drive dies.
Maybe your files get corrupted. Maybe it’s just... gone.
That’s where the 3-2-1 backup strategy comes in. It’s simple, flexible, and has stood the test of time.
What is 3-2-1?
This backup strategy was coined by photographer Peter Krogh in 2009—and it still holds up. Here’s the rule:
3 copies of your data (1 original + 2 backups)
2 different types of storage media
1 copy stored offsite
Why it works:
Multiple backups = better chances of recovery
Using different storage types protects you from one failing
Offsite storage protects you from fire, flood, theft—or just spilling coffee on everything
Why this matters for Hivenet users
Even though Hivenet is a distributed, resilient storage system, no single solution is bulletproof. A good backup strategy adds layers of protection—just in case.
Hivenet fits perfectly into the “1 offsite copy” role. It’s cloud-based, geographically distributed, and always there when you need it.
In the next few articles, we’ll unpack each part of 3-2-1 in more detail—and look at how to go beyond it if you want to sleep really well at night.
