Three copies: your first line of defense

One file, two backups—because things break, and stuff happens.

Written by Thanasis Karavasilis

Why three copies?

Because one can fail. And two? Still risky. But three? That’s when you start sleeping better.

Think of it like a sandwich:

  • Original: the file you’re actively using

  • Backup #1: a local copy—like an external hard drive or NAS

  • Backup #2: an offsite or cloud copy—like Hivenet

If something happens to your original, you’ve still got a local backup. If something happens to both your original and local copy (flood, theft, fire, etc.), your offsite backup is your lifeline.

Real-world example:

Let’s say you’re a designer:

  • Your laptop holds your active files

  • You back them up weekly to an external SSD

  • Hivenet stores a copy in the cloud

If your laptop dies, you're covered. If your home gets hit by a power surge, you’re still covered. That's the power of three.
