The linked white paper is dated November 2023. It models cloud storage, including a projected 2025 mix of personal devices and dedicated servers. Its results depend on those assumptions and need current validation before they can describe today's service.
Carbon emissions, electricity use and water use measure different things. A percentage for one cannot be reused as a percentage for another.
Store and Send
Store keeps files for ongoing access. Send makes a transfer available for a limited time. A storage comparison does not establish the impact of a Send transfer or prove that it has a lower impact than another transfer service.
Before sending, check Send's file and transfer limits and the link's availability period. Recipients should save files they need before expiry. Keep an original or another usable copy for later; an expiring transfer is not a backup or a measurement of avoided emissions.
Check a claim before using it
Identify an equivalent task to compare, such as storing a set of files for a year or sending a transfer of a given size and frequency.
Check the study date, comparison service, included sources of emissions and exclusions.
Check whether the equipment, electricity, region and usage assumptions apply to that task.
Record the source, date, unit and scope beside the claim. Mark any missing evidence as unconfirmed.
