How Hivenet handles passwords and passphrases

Your account password signs you in. Your encryption passphrase protects your files.

Hivenet uses two separate credentials. One gives you access to your account. The other protects the data you store in Hivenet.

This separation matters. Your account password can be recovered if you forget it. Your encryption passphrase cannot.

Your account password

Your account password is the password you use to sign in to Hivenet.

Hivenet manages this password for account access, so it can be recovered or reset if you lose it. It is only used for login. It is not used to encrypt or decrypt your files or related metadata in Hivenet.

Your encryption passphrase

Your encryption passphrase is created when you set up Hivenet for the first time.

This passphrase is used to protect the data you store in Hivenet. Hivenet cannot access it, which means it cannot recover it for you if you lose it.

Warning: If you lose your encryption passphrase, you will permanently lose access to the data stored in Hivenet.

Keep your encryption passphrase safe

Store your encryption passphrase somewhere secure, such as a password manager. Do not rely on memory alone.

It helps to remember the difference:

  • Account password: used to sign in and can be recovered

  • Encryption passphrase: used to protect your data and cannot be recovered
