Your encryption passphrase is the only key to your files on Hivenet. If you forget it, we can’t recover it for you.
That’s by design—to protect your privacy. But it also means keeping your passphrase safe is your responsibility.
There are two main ways to do this:
Option 1: Use a password manager
A password manager is like a secure vault that remembers complex passwords so you don’t have to. It can also autofill passwords, generate strong new ones, and sync across devices.
If you’re serious about protecting your data, this is the most reliable option.
Popular password managers include:
Bitwarden (open-source and free to start)
1Password (paid, with excellent UX)
KeePass (DIY and local only)
Built-in options from Apple, Google, Firefox, or Windows
Choose one that fits your needs—and make sure you don’t lose access to it.
Option 2: Store your passphrase securely (without a manager)
If you don’t want to use a password manager:
Write your passphrase down and store it in a secure physical location (like a safe)
Avoid storing it as a plain text file on your computer or cloud service
Don’t reuse it anywhere else
Password managers introduce a new “single point of failure”—if you lose your master password, everything inside is locked. But the convenience and added security are often worth it.
Next, we’ll walk through what to do if you lose your encryption passphrase, including how to recover what you can and start over safely.
