Can I protect my transfer with a password?

Yes — and it’s optional, but highly recommended for sensitive files.

How it works

Before you create your link, you’ll see an option to add a password. If you enable it:

  • Your file transfer will be encrypted as usual

  • The download link will only work after entering the correct password

  • Recipients won’t see or receive the password automatically — you’ll need to share it with them separately

Why use a password?

While all transfers on Send are already encrypted and chunked, a password adds one more layer of protection. It’s especially useful if you’re sharing:

  • Personal documents (e.g. IDs, contracts)

  • Work files or confidential materials

  • Anything you wouldn’t want downloaded without permission

What makes a good password?

We don’t enforce strict rules, but we suggest:

  • At least 8 characters

  • A mix of letters and numbers

  • Avoid obvious words (like “file123” or “password”)

Remember: we don’t store or recover your password. If you forget it, there’s no way to unlock the file — you’ll need to re-upload and resend it with a new one.

How should I share the password?

We leave that up to you. A few good options:

  • Send it in a separate message (e.g. text or chat)

  • Call or tell them directly

  • Avoid pasting it in the same email or chat as the file link (that defeats the purpose)

What the recipient sees

When they click the link, they’ll be asked to enter the password before downloading. If it’s wrong, the file stays locked. If it’s correct, the download starts immediately.
