The same file can show different size values on different devices because the displays use different calculations or rounding. A smaller displayed number does not, by itself, mean that part of the file is missing.
The two display conventions
Storage displays use decimal or binary calculations. The table below explains the difference.
Convention | Calculation |
Decimal | Each larger unit is 1,000 times the previous one. |
Binary | Each larger unit is 1,024 times the previous one. |
In decimal units, 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. The corresponding binary unit is 1 GiB, or 1,073,741,824 bytes. Some software uses the label GB for a binary calculation. For example, 1,000,000,000,000 bytes is 1 TB in decimal units or about 931.32 GiB in binary units.
Compare the same file
Check that you are comparing the same file, not a folder total or the account's total used space.
If the file details show an exact size in bytes, compare that value. Note the app, version and unit shown.
Download a separate copy and open it to check that its contents are complete. Keep the original while comparing.
If the exact byte sizes differ unexpectedly or the file will not open, contact Hivenet Support with the values and devices involved. Do not assume every difference is a unit conversion.
Storage and speed are different
A size such as GB describes an amount of data. A rate such as MB/s describes data transferred each second. Mbps measures bits per second; one byte is eight bits, so these rate values are not directly interchangeable.
Changing how a size is displayed does not add storage to your account.
